Prepare and submit an application
The Research Funding Development Team provides support to large grant applications as well as funding to help development of research applications.
Find out more about application support.
Step-by-step: prepare and submit an application
You'll need to:
- read the funder's guidance and make sure you're eligible to apply
- check whether the call is restricted, and follow the relevant application process
- make sure that your project meets the definition of research
- check that you meet the University's Principal Investigator (PI) criteria.
- make sure you comply with the guidance for including a CTO on a research grant (if you want a College Teaching Officer (CTO) to be a PI on your project)
As well as the funder's deadline, there are a number of internal deadlines you may need to comply with.
You'll need to check which deadlines apply to your project, and make sure you have enough time to prepare and submit your application.
4 weeks before the funder's deadline, you'll need to let the Research Office know that you're applying for funding.
You can do this by creating a new project in Worktribe.
You should also let your Department know that you are making a funding application.
When writing your proposal, you'll need to:
- read the funder's guidance, and make sure that your research aligns with their aims and values
- explain what makes your research exciting, and original
- demonstrate why your project matters, why your approach will work, and why you chose it
- identify possible challenges, and explain how you’ll address them
Read more about writing your proposal.
You'll work with your Department to cost and price your project.
Read our guidance on what you'll need to consider when costing and pricing.
You may need to include supporting documents with your application. You should read the funder's guidance to find out what these are:
Supporting documents may include:
- a gender equality statement (if you're applying to UKRI, NIHR Global Health Research, Global Challenges Research Fund or Newton Fund)
- a statement of support from the Vice-Chancellor or Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, or Head of Department (the funder's requirements will let you know if this is needed)
- a data management plan
- a plan for how your project is going to create impact
- referee statements
- other supporting documents (check the funder's requirements to find out what these are)
As part of your application, you'll need to complete a mandatory risk assessment form.
Once your application is ready, you'll need to submit it through Worktribe.
