Eligibility and deadlines
Once you've found a funding opportunity, you'll need to check that you're eligible to apply, and make sure you have enough time to meet any relevant deadlines.
Check your eligibility
You'll need to:
- read the funder’s guidance to confirm that you’re eligible to apply
- make sure that your project meets the definition of research
- check that you meet the University's Principal Investigator (PI) criteria. If you want a College Teaching Officer (CTO) to be a PI on your project, make sure you comply with the guidance for including a CTO on a research grant.
Make sure you have time to meet any relevant deadlines
If you need help working out your deadlines, use our application deadline calculator.
As well as internal Department deadlines, there are a number of other deadlines you need to be aware of:
Restricted call deadlines
You will need to check if the call you are applying to is restricted, as there may be additional deadlines.
4 weeks before the funder's deadline
You need to tell the Research Office that you're applying for funding. You must do this by creating a new project in Worktribe.
When you create a new project, you'll need to include:
- the name of the Principal Investigator (PI)
- the name of the funder
- the funder's deadline
- the name, and url, of the funding call
- the type of project
- the start and end dates of the project
20 working days before the funder's deadline
Request a support letter from the Vice-Chancellor or Pro-Vice-Chancellor, if your funder needs one.
7 working days before the funder's deadline
Deadline for submitting applications for:
- US federal agency funding
- ERC Synergy, Starting, Consolidator and Advanced Grant funding
The Research Office may occasionally need to apply a 7 working day deadline to other calls. If this is the case, we'll let you know well in advance.
5 working days before the funder's deadline
Deadline for submitting your funding application, unless you're using the small applications process or the late applications process (see below)
2 working days before the funder's deadline
Deadline for submitting a late application or a small application.
