Prepare a DEFRA due diligence declaration
If using genetic resources covered by the Nagoya Protocol, there are two checkpoints in the research and development phase where a due diligence declaration must be submitted to the UK Competent Authority.

| Checkpoint 1: When in receipt of research grants to support the utilisation of the genetic resource | After the receipt of the first instalment of funding but before the final project report or project end | Defra (via Research Office) |
| Checkpoint 2: Reaching the final stages of product development (i.e. commercialisation) as a result of utilising the genetic resource | At the stage of final development of a product, developed from the utilisation of genetic resources and / or aTK. | Defra (via Research Office). |
On reaching either checkpoint:
- Complete the relevant due diligence declaration template:

- Send the completed form to the research governance team who will assist in submitting the declaration to the Defra on behalf of the University
